“Autism, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s are diseases that affect the vulnerable population, which happens to be the very young and the very old,” says Sidney Baker, MD.
Autism is on the rise and traditional doctors are under-equipped to help children with autism, leaving many parents, siblings, and teachers searching for answers.
Between 2002 and 2014, the prevalence of Autism skyrocketed from 1 in 150 to 1 in 45. It is estimated that only a third of this noted increase is due to better diagnosis and reporting, and less than 20 percent can be attributed to genetic factors.
But it’s important to point out that there is no such thing as “autism.”
There are autisms …
As Sid Baker, Jeff Bland, Mark Hyman, and Russ Jaffe point out in their interviews, all diseases have a spectrum.
While traditional medicine duped people into believing that diseases can be labeled and fit into a neat box, increasingly the understanding is that diseases are more like rainbows; there are different sub-types within the same dis-ease.
Current medical practice emphasis on naming a diagnosis and finding a drug is an approach can work well for infectious diseases and trauma. But autism is often dubbed a “biochemical train wreck” because it is a complex, multi-causal, multi-symptom medical condition further complicated by biochemical individuality.
As a complicated whole-body disorder, autism is remediable through functional medicine approaches. It has been found that impairments in gut bacteria, digestion, detoxification, glutathione metabolism, and methylation are common in children with autism.
Thankfully many founders of the functional medicine movement, including Jeff Bland, MD, Sid Baker, MD, Mark Hyman, MD, Martha Herbert, Ken Bock, Russ Jaffe, Ben Lynch, Tom Malterre, and many others, shared their insights during the summit.

Anyone who wants to be healthy needs to mind their mitochondria, eliminate environmental toxins better, boost glutathione, and improve gut health—all topics that are discussed at length throughout this interview series.
Why learn about autism?
Even if you have a healthy child now, you’ll learn medical insights that will ensure you they stay that way.
Since the 1990s, hundreds of studies have sounded the alarm about how environmental toxicity is harming us, especially our children, and directly leading to increased rates of autism. A study published in Academic Pediatrics in 2011 estimated that 54% of American children have at least one chronic illness.
The human brain is the most complex structure in the known universe.
These discussions are jam-packed with practical health tips for parents, teachers and healthcare practitioners to help them improve the brain health and behavior of children.
While autism is classically defended as a neurological disorder with characteristic impairments in language, communication, and behavior, the condition has noted whole-body dis-ease.
